Dorothy L. Whiteman, 93 formerly of Lewistown, passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2017 at the William Penn Nursing Home.

Born July 15, 1924 in Altoona, Pa. She was the daughter of the late David and Beryl (Mason) Miller. She was the first of Seven children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Whiteman in 1969; her brothers, George, Donald and a sister, Ann (Miller) Swain.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Elizabeth Bowden and companion Lon Fisher of Sunbury; Samuel Whiteman and wife Mary of McVeytown; Suzanne Ramsay and husband Corey of Lewistown; 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; her siblings, Doris Clemens of Burnham; Nina Anderson of Lewistown and John “Punkin” Miller of Lewistown.

Dorothy Graduated from McVeytown-Bratton-Oliver High School 1942. She grew up in the most trying time of the U.S. The great depression and WWII. Dorothy left the area and traveled to Baltimore, MD. There she graduated from Baltimore School of Nursing as an RN. She returned to Mifflin County and worked at F.W. Black, Lewistown and Huntingdon Hospital later retiring from the Selinsgrove Center after 21 years of dedicated service. Dorothy married in 1948 to Carl Whiteman. The couple had three children Elizabeth, Samuel and Suzanne.

Dorothy housed and loved numerous pets throughout the years. She had an enormous love and received much joy from her cats. Dorothy knew all about them and would travel to animal shows in Philadelphia and New York.

Dorothy loved traveling, she visited many states in the U.S including Hawaii and countries including Germany and Ireland.

Dorothy was an avid sports fan which included football, NASCAR and professional baseball until her favorite team went on strike, calling them Greedy!

A special thank you to William Penn Health Care, Lewistown for their compassionate care and love shown to our Mother Dorothy Whiteman.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday December 3, 2017 at Barr Funeral Home and Crematory, 120 Logan Street, Lewistown with the Rev. John Walters officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until time of service.

Interment will be private.
